TAKE PART IN OUR SURVEY

The Gambling-Awareness Messaging & Education (GAME) project aims to minimise gambling harms among young gamers in the Northern Territory.

We want to know more about in-game spending habits and purchasable video game features such as loot boxes, esports betting, skin betting, and token wagering.

Take our quick survey and share your thoughts on in-game spending and the supposed link between some games and gambling. Your insights will help us understand the impacts of such elements and contribute to future harm minimisation strategies.

ABOUT G.A.M.E

Gambling Awareness Messaging & Education (GAME) in gaming spaces

is a youth-led project that explores how chance-based features appear in a lot of popular games these days -

and how young gamers in the Northern Territory understand and respond to them.

Working alongside The Array [], this Flinders led project aims to co-design messages that remind young players gaming is meant to be fun (not draining).

GAME takes a strength-based approach—centering youth voice, digital literacy, and critical reflection on the design of games and in-game spending.

Innovative and future-focused, GAME will share a range of engaging, youth-informed materials designed to support smart, values-based decision-making in digital play. The project has found a welcome home within The Array's creative and tech positive community. Keep an eye on this space—there’s more to come...

This project is funded by the Northern Territory Government Community Benefit Fund gambling research grants scheme.

REWARDS

Entertainment and fun.

Games and virtual spaces can be a great way for people to connect with friends and family, relax, reduce stress and be creative.

Meet new people and expand your social network.

You can make new friends in multiplayer games and find a community where you can express yourself through gaming.

Improve problem-solving skills.

Research has shown that some games can improve your problem-solving skills and enhance your short-term memory.

Improve coordination.

Some games can improve your hand-eye coordination and speed, if players need to balance visual and sound cues with physical movement.

RISKS

Games that encourage you to pay for in-app items like ‘loot’ boxes, without knowing what’s inside, may seem normal. But there’s a risk that if you get nothing of value, you will want to play again and again until you ‘win’ – even though it costs you lots of money.

This means you may actually be gambling without realising it. Chasing the excitement can become hard to resist, and hard to pay for.

Online safety advocates relate this ‘game of chance’ structure to gambling and have criticised the behaviours it may encourage. The way an item is revealed often has flashy lights and sound effects similar in style to poker machines. These types of purchases are banned in some locations because of known experiences where players, including children, have spent huge amounts of money on loot boxes to try to get a certain item.

There’s more than one way to play - remember... you don't always have to pay!
