Daniel Ferguson’s journey into game development started young, not with formal study,
but by reverse-engineering games online when he was just 13.

I loved picking apart games and figuring out how they worked.
Eventually, I wanted to figure out how to make them myself.

What began as late-night experiments evolved into a full-fledged creative tech career,
with Daniel later completing a Bachelor of Design in Games at RMIT in Melbourne.
While formally trained, he considers himself largely self-taught on the technical front,
blending real-world experience with his education to develop a versatile skillset across both programming and game art.

THE WORK
Making it
in the Top End
Originally from Darwin, Daniel moved away in 2018 to pursue study and career opportunities, but in 2024, he returned with his partner and three kids to reconnect with home and help build something new.
“Darwin has a slower pace that gives me more breathing room — to focus on my own projects, build genuine friendships in the tech community, and spend time with my family. Without sacrificing opportunity.”
He sees Darwin’s emerging creative tech scene as a place full of potential. It’s small enough to make a difference but growing fast enough to offer real possibility.
“There’s a lot of room to carve out your own path and contribute something new. It’s also a tight-knit community, so it’s easier to connect and collaborate.”
On Creative Inspiration
The natural environment of the Top End often shapes Daniel’s creative direction, the colours, the light, the wildlife, even the weather.
“Being a bit removed from the hustle of big cities helps me stay focused and creative.”
He’s also a firm believer in growing the local game dev community and wants to see more Territorians exploring tech as a career path.
Local Life
When he’s not coding or designing, you might find Daniel fuelling up on his favourite dish: Chicken laksa from Chok’s Place, Darwin Galleria.
Why Darwin, Why Now
“Darwin has a lot of untapped potential in creative tech. If you like starting new things or being part of something evolving, this is a great place to be.”
Daniel is focused on growing his portfolio and increasing local collaboration, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

LEARN MORE ABOUT DAN
My name is Daniel Ferguson, and I am a ‘Game Programmer/Artist’
I am currently involved in a range of game programming projects as well as personal game projects.
I started my tech journey "hacking" online games when I was around 13, then moved onto making my own games in gamemaker.
I studied a Bachelors of Design in Games at RMIT in Melbourne.
I'd say from a technical standpoint I'm mostly self taught but I learned a lot of design and other development soft skills from uni and working in the industry.
I loved picking apart games and figuring out how they work and eventually wanted to figure out how to make them myself.
I was born and raised here in Darwin, NT but moved to Melbourne in 2018.
I moved back to Darwin in 2024 with my partner and 3 kids because we wanted to raise our kids where we grew up.
The creative tech scene here is still growing, which means there’s a lot of room to carve out your own path and contribute something new. It’s also a tight-knit community, so it’s easier to connect with people and collaborate.
Darwin’s lifestyle has a slower pace that gives me more breathing room to focus on my own projects, make genuine friendships within the creative tech community, and spend time with my family - without sacrificing opportunity.
Living in the Top End gives me a bit of distance from the hustle of bigger cities, which helps me stay focused and creative. There’s also something inspiring about the natural environment here (the colours, the weather, the wildlife) which sometimes finds its way into my creative direction.
